Maranatha Novembre
CEO at Allure Novembre Fashion
Maranatha Novembre was born in Haiti and migrated to the United States at the age of three. Raised in Boston, MA, she attended a performing arts high school to study theater, and it was there where she discovered her true artistic passion in costume design. During college, while studying international business at Johnson & Wales University, Mara started her fashion company Allure Novembre. Mara’s first designs were turbans for her personal use. These turbans garnered interests from friends and peers, which motivated the official launch of Allure Novembre in 2012.
Although Mara had a clear passion and talent for fashion and creativity, Allure was a side project to her career in human resources. The corporate office setting, however, was suffocating to Mara’s artistic spirit. Through prayer and a surprise layoff, Mara finally possessed the courage to dedicate her life to artistry. In 2016, she moved to New York City to pursue a career as a costumer for tv and film. Since then, she has worked on a range of popular shows, from Power to Oscar nominee Ava Duvernay’s When They See Us, to Madam Secretary. Dressing actors reinvigorated Mara’s passion for design and she rebranded and relaunched Allure Novembre in 2019.
Returning to both Mara’s and Allure’s roots, the first collection consisted of headwear manufactured in her birthplace Haiti. But accessories were just a launching point. In 2020, Mara released her beloved inaugural Gold Rush collection of swimwear, marking Allure’s greatest sales to date. Allure’s popularity outpaced Mara’s hand-sewn practice. So she began to outsource her designs and Allure has grown by at least 25% in sales each year since. In 2022 alone, Mara’s designs were featured in Miami swim week, and New York and Paris fashion weeks, showcasing pieces from swimwear to high fashion evening gowns. Allure continues to grow each year, empowering women through its unique and timeless designs.

With over 20 years of expertise in strategic recruitment, admissions, financial aid, and marketing, he embodies the spirit of achievement that deserves nomination at the 4th Annual Haitian American Young Professionals Award.
Francois’s story is not just one of professional accomplishments, but a narrative etched with purpose and the unyielding quest for inclusivity and empowerment. As the CEO and Founder of National Diversity Fairs (NDF), a social enterprise dedicated to assisting under-represented high school and college students in their pursuit of higher education, Francois stands as a beacon of hope for countless individuals seeking to navigate the labyrinthine world of academia.
Francois’s journey to founding NDCF was shaped by personal experiences that underscored the transformative power of education. His resolve to bridge this gap and champion inclusivity became the cornerstone of NDF’s mission. Through this noble endeavor, he seeks to educate and inspire all individuals, especially first-generation and under-represented students, to envision a career, not just a job, and to equip themselves with the education and degrees necessary to realize their dreams.

Jeff Similien
CEO at LowKey Dispensary
Oftentimes we fool ourselves into thinking there’s a prerequisite to obtaining what we need. We’re always in this constant pursuit of more information, experience, and connections with the hope of making more money.
What I’ve learned in my years of experience is that this model of thinking can cost a lot of time and money, and is evident in the number of people with high degrees, heavy debt, and limited success.
Typically people pursue information, to make more money, in hopes of translating that into better connections. This aligns with traditional schooling models but what if I told you there’s a more efficient way to hit your goals?
I believe that you don’t make connections based on the money you make, you make money based on your connections.
Much of my success in Cannabis and Commercial Real Estate has been based on my keen ability to build relationships so I’ve also made it my job to help other men do the same. So how do we leverage the quality of our relationships to improve our quality of life?
Well the quality of our relationship is directly related to (3) qualities:
✅Establishing Core Values
✅Effective Communication
✅Genuine Connection
Whether it’s personal, professional, or romantic relationships, we as black men must embrace these qualities to improve our lives. I’ve come to realize many of us have been learning how to be better fathers, husbands, and professionals without always having the proper guidance.
I created the Kings Amongst Kings network to allow black men to have an outlet to learn and connect with others seeking to elevate. It’s an open forum to allow us to socialize and share our experiences for collective growth.
As I like to say to my colleagues: Just remember that you’re only ONE CONNECTION AWAY.
Let’s connect! I’m open to building with real estate and cannabis professionals as well as business owners, investors, and aspiring entrepreneurs. Yes, I’m also open to speaking engagements so feel free to reach out. I’m happy to be that one connection you needed to transform your life.

This included creating a survival guide presentation for families on how to navigate in the US, collaborated in providing beneficial resources for families, and create a system for ongoing responsibility and accountability to Haitian families within the community.
This is just one example of her work drive and commitment. Reverend Germain is not only a gem but one of a kind unique and essential leader needed within our community and is without a doubt irreplaceable.

Dr. Elizabeth Louis
2023 Board of Directors member-at-large candidate
Elizabeth Louis, PhDAs an early career psychologist, I am appreciative of opportunities within APA and beyond that have nurtured me as a Black, Haitian American woman. I am cognizant of how my experiences and intersecting identities have been shaped through the lens of psychological science and global health. My identity as a first-generation scholar started from the Upward Bound TRIO program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Leadership Alliance Summer Research at Stanford University, and U.S. Agency for International Development. During my doctoral program, I was selected for a U.S. State Department Boren National Security Fellowship where I lived in Haiti to research mental health with a local nongovernmental organization. I was also part of the weather and climate psychology lab at the University of Georgia and completed my dissertation on natural disasters. After internship, I completed the National Institutes of Health Fogarty Fellowship in Rwanda. I learned about historical trauma, healing, and how mental health manifest intergenerationally. I have cultivated a research, practitioner, and global lens that aligns with the mission within APA’s Board of Directors. I am a member of the Committee for Global Psychology with past experiences within the APA MOU with Portugal, the Board of Educational Affairs Task Force for Masters’ Programs, the Commission on Accreditation, and the Leadership Academy. I am confident that my understanding of the structures and stakeholders of APA and my application of psychology equips me. I am grateful for the opportunity to be considered to join others in their commitment and service to APA.
Statement on issues facing APA/psychology
As an early career psychologist, I can recall different times personally and professionally where the concept of best decisions versus right decisions are front and center. During these precious moments of our lives, there are numerous challenges, issues, overt and subtle defeats that have contributed to the psychological impact.
I recognize that there are situations in which APA will be called to make tough decisions. Key issues facing psychology does not fully encompass the following: the mental health crisis; access to culturally appropriate mental health care; addressing racism, microaggressions and other isms; the toll that disparities play a role in health and mental health outcomes; the dominance of Western approaches in global psychology; ensuring policies and practice that uphold the rights of underserved and stigmatized communities; promoting and upholding mental health initiatives that serve people regardless of status with dignity and respect; and issues that affect groups across age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, spirituality, religion, education, disability, neighborhood, country, language, and other identities that reminds us of not only defining wellness but living a life with mental well-being. It is imperative to identify the values that root us and our collective processes that will steer us in making decisions that will impact present and future generations.
I am reflective of the Haitian principle of lakou that seeks to co-create sacred and affirming forms of belonging where voices are welcomed and people can embrace their best selves while also heal or address vulnerable aspects of their selfhood in community. As a collective group, we must lead with intentions and foster lakous that will aspire and inspire creative initiatives to resolve challenges that are both foreseen and unseen.
Leading with accountability and transparency along with facing our past histories to inform our future steps is critical as we represent psychology at the practice, research, policy, academic, advocacy, community, and global levels. It requires us to be present, attentive and proactive to the needs of members, communities and society, while also apply international perspectives to enrich the association’s trajectory. We must journey in collective efforts with diverse individuals, groups and communities with shared visions that can be attained and overcome struggles. I leave you with this African proverb:
“Until the lion tells the story, the hunter will always be the hero.”
Let our truths liberate us from the misaligned and misinformed narratives that have reinforced the issues of today in order to decisively rewrite, reposition, restructure, and reimagine tomorrow’s solutions and proclaim victories!

Brenda Lormil-Raymond
Founder of the Haitian American Medical Association
Meet Brenda Lormil-Raymond—a dedicated, compassionate, and dynamic leader committed to transforming the delivery of health education for Haitian-American communities in Massachusetts. Raised by Haitian immigrant parents, Brenda’s cultural background served as the driving force behind the establishment of HAMA in April 2017. This organization is committed to addressing health disparities and enhancing access to equitable care within the Haitian community. They achieve this by offering culturally sensitive health information and also by nurturing the pipeline of culturally diverse healthcare professionals through annual academic scholarship opportunities and mentorship support for Haitian students in Massachusetts.
The phrase “healthcare system failures” often evokes a sense of hopelessness, but Brenda’s perspective is refreshingly different. She firmly believes that grassroots efforts by community organizations like HAMA play a vital role in informing, educating, and empowering patients and their families, thereby bridging the gap to better care. Although HAMA’s journey started in Boston, Brenda envisions its impact transcending borders as they collaborate with other organizations and individuals to reach Haitian communities in different states and countries.
Currently serving as the Equity Nurse Practitioner for Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center in Boston, MA, Brenda provides patient-centered care to phase I clinical trial participants in the Termeer Center for Targeted Therapies. Working alongside other passionate professionals at MGH, Brenda seeks innovative ways to ensure equitable access to clinical trial care.
Brenda’s nursing journey began in 2011, and since then, she has continuously honed her leadership skills, which now benefit her growing HAMA and VDI Consulting team. She is an alumna of Regis College in Weston, MA, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 2011 and her Master of Science in Nursing in 2015.
